Rockrose is a flowering evergreen shrub native to the ancient city of Jericho, which produces a fragrant resin that can be used to reduce inflammation of the skin. Shepherds would gather the resin by combing the hair of the goats that would graze in rockrose-abundant fields. Some researchers think this shrub is the one referred to as the "Balm of Gilead" in the Old Testament, which was known for both its aromatic and medicinal properties. It was an article of export, and in the later days of Jewish history, the village of Jericho was believed to be the only place where the true balm grew, and even there the plant was confined to two small gardens.
